How to care for your Mala Beads

Malas serve as a constant reminder of your truth, your intentions, and the divinity within you, holding great significance in your daily life and rituals. Choosing your mala is a deeply personal act, and activating your mala also imbues your intensions into the beads.

I tell everyone to look through the ones I carry, read the descriptions, look at them again, go to bed and think about which one was calling your name. The mala that you’re drawn to first is the one you’re meant to have. It's that simple.

Mala beads are known to absorb and store energy – a big reason why we promote positive thinking and positive energy. BUT they can absorb negative energy too!!!
Because of how easily these beads absorb the energies of not only you, but also your surroundings, on occasion, I recommend you cleanse them regularly.

How do you clean your Mala??
~Laying the mala out under the light of the full moon to provide it with a natural recharge
~Burning sage or palo santo near your mala to release energies that do not serve
~Placing your mala in a Tibetan singing bowl or tingsha bell to purify your mala through sound vibration

Malas are extremely personal pieces. They absorb your energies over time, and as a result, become more powerful the longer you wear them. DON'T let anyone else wear your Mala.

You will notice the beads get darker over time, that's GOOD, that means they are absorbing your energy.

If your mala breaks, it means that you’ve outgrown the intentions you set into the mala. This means you have overcome what you needed the mala to do and it's time to set a new intention!! A broken mala is meant to symbolize a broken cycle, i.e. that you no longer ‘need’ that mala anymore.

I have different mala's for different intentions.

If you choose to meditate on your mala, most people use a mantra. A mantra is a word, sound, or phrase repeated to aid in your concentration. It can be as simple as the word “love,” or something you are thankful for or something you want to concentrate on.

To count your mantras, hold your mala in your hand (which ever hand you want) and turn each bead with your thumb and middle finger. The index finger is believed to represent “ego” and is not recommended to turn the beads.

Going all the way around your mala (108 beads), you will eventually reach the guru bead—the bead that dangles from the mala. This signals a time for reflection. You can reflect on your meditation practice, give thanks to your mantra, honor your guru, God, Goddess, or show yourself a moment of gratitude for slowing down to meditate. Never continue over the guru bead. Instead, turn around and continue in the opposite direction.

It’s widely believed that when one uses a mala for meditation, and makes it all the way around, they will have found enlightenment. If you choose to meditate on your mala, be patient. Your mind will probably wander. The practice of bringing your attention back to your mantra and your beads is the practice of mindfulness-and helps you meditate and find some peace for a few minutes.

If your mala falls or drops on the ground, clean it with a sage stick or leave it out under moon light.

There is no right or wrong way to wear your mala, wear it where you "feel" like it belongs. If I'm struggling with my heart chakra, I wear mine on my left arm. It's a very personal piece, so let it guide you
